1. 5 liters of blood @ 40% hematocrit = 3 liters of plasma ~ 3 liters water
2. RBC are already saturated (pulse-ox = 100%) so they won’t hold any more O2, no matter how much O2 you push by concentrated O2 or hyperbaric: the hemoglobin won’t hold any more O2.
3. So we are only talking about blood plasma oxygenating. For hyperbaric, blood has to saturate first, before any O2 goes into the body. BioOxygen, on the contrary, goes into the body from the mouth, immediately, which is a huge advantage.
i. at 37 C, 1 atm, solubility is 6.783 mg/liter plasma, x 1/0.21 = 32.3 mg/liter @ 100% O2, normal oxygen level in air is 21% x 3 liters plasma = 96.9 mg O2 in plasma @ 100% O2 in air.
ii. because the subject is slightly warmer than the 37 C air, we subtract 6.73 instead of 6.783 as the ‘normal’ O2—this is subjective and changes with the intensity of the workout and body temperature of the subject. But both numbers are very close so we are in the right ballpark.
iii. Remember that we are working with absolute pressure, so when we say 4 atm, we are only meaning 3 atmospheres as measured by a pressure gauge in the hyperbaric chamber—these calculations go to 3 atm gauge. I decided not to use the 4 atm JAM mentioned because it is ridiculously high. We can add a new row if JAM thinks we should.
iv. The total mg O2 added by hyperbaric & concentrated O2 is less 6.73 mg at 21% O2 and 1 atm: 96.9 – 6.73 = 90.2 mg O2 added. @ 2 atm, 187 mg added; @3 atm, 284 mg added; @ 4 atm, 381 mg added.
v. each gallon BioOxygen has 2,844 mg O2 or about 752 mg/liter O2. The retail price per mg for Extra Strength BioOxygen is $80/2844 = $0.028, or about $0.03. 3 cents per mg absorbable O2. A great deal!
