What Gives You Energy?
Most people spend their lives chasing stimulation. Few learn how to build personal energy.

A question I’ve been asking for years is deceptively simple:
What gives you energy?
Most people answer quickly.
- Coffee.
- Exercise.
- A vacation.
- A great meal.
- A productive day.
- A motivational podcast.
- A good night’s sleep.
- A win at work.
- A weekend away.
But if we slow down and look more carefully, many of these things don’t actually create energy.
They stimulate us.
And there is a profound difference between stimulation and energy.
In fact, understanding that difference may be one of the most important lessons in personal energy management.
The Great Energy Misunderstanding
Most people today are not suffering from a lack of motivation.
They’re suffering from a personal energy problem.
Yet almost everything in modern culture teaches us to solve low energy with stimulation.
Need more energy?
Drink coffee.
Need more focus?
Take something.
Need more drive?
Push harder.
Need more productivity?
Work longer.
Need more results?
Try harder.
But what if the issue isn’t a lack of effort?
What if the issue is a lack of available energy?
I’ve spent decades studying human energy, recovery, performance, and vitality. What I’ve learned is that many people are living in a state I call energy debt.
Personal Energy debt occurs when the demand placed upon the body continually exceeds its ability to recover, regenerate, and restore itself to a vital level.
When that happens, the body begins borrowing from tomorrow to pay for today.
Eventually, that debt comes due.
The symptoms are familiar:
- Fatigue
- Brain fog
- Poor sleep
- Reduced resilience
- Lower performance
- Increased stress
- Slower recovery
- Feeling older than you should
Most people think this is simply part of getting older. It is, but it’s not as large a part as people think.
I don’t.
I believe much of it is the consequence of poor energy management and a lack of attention to the systems that produce and restore personal energy.
Life Runs on Light
One of the most overlooked facts in health and human performance is this:
Life itself is powered by light.
Every plant on Earth depends on sunlight.
Every food source ultimately traces back to sunlight.
Our circadian rhythms are regulated by light.
Our hormones respond to light.
Our rest and sleep are influenced by light.
Even our cells respond to light.
The emerging science of photobiomodulation has demonstrated that specific wavelengths of light can interact with mitochondria—the energy-producing structures within our cells—to support cellular function and energy production.
The mitochondria produce ATP (adenosine triphosphate), often referred to as the body’s energy currency. When mitochondrial function declines, people frequently experience lower energy, slower recovery, and reduced performance.
This is one of the reasons I became fascinated by light-based technologies years ago.
Not because light is trendy.
Because light is fundamental.
Long before there were supplements, stimulants, biohacks, or productivity systems, there was light.
Stimulation vs. Personal Energy
This distinction changed my life.
Stimulation creates temporary output, and if relied on, has a shorter life.
Personal energy regeneration creates sustainable capacity, capabilities, and a longer life.
A stimulant can make you feel better temporarily.
Personal energy regeneration helps you function better, consistently.
Stimulation often comes with a cost.
Regenerating personal energy creates resilience.
Stimulation borrows from the future.
Personal energy recovery helps build the future.
This is why so many people feel trapped.
They continue chasing the next source of stimulation while neglecting the systems responsible for true energy production, recovery, and regeneration.
The result is a cycle of temporary highs followed by recurring lows. The accumulation of personal energy debt, and a lot of future struggle.
What they need is not more stimulation.
They need more personal energy.
The Three Drivers of Human Energy
Over the years, I’ve come to view human energy through three primary lenses:
Energy Production
How efficiently does your body create energy?
This includes:
- Cellular health
- Mitochondrial function
- Nutrition
- Oxygen utilization
- Light exposure
- Recovery capacity
Energy Regulation
How effectively does your body manage energy?
This includes:
- Sleep
- Stress adaptation
- Nervous system regulation
- Recovery practices
- Circadian rhythm alignment
Energy Demand
How much energy are you consuming?
This includes:
- Work
- Family responsibilities
- Exercise
- Travel
- Decision-making
- Emotional stress
- Daily life
Many people focus only on demand.
Very few focus on improving energy production and energy regulation.
That’s where the real leverage exists.

Why Personal Energy Matters More Than Motivation
People often tell me:
“JAM, I just need more motivation.”
I usually disagree.
Motivation without energy is just a motive without the power to do it.
You know what you want to do.
You simply don’t have the capacity to do it consistently.
When personal energy improves:
- Motivation improves
- Clarity improves
- Mood improves
- Recovery improves
- Performance improves
The person hasn’t changed.
The energy available to that person has changed.
This is why I’ve spent so much of my life helping people improve their personal energy rather than merely chasing productivity.
Because energy comes first.
Everything else follows.
The Regenus Center Difference
At Regenus Center, our focus isn’t simply relaxation.
It isn’t spa services.
It isn’t temporary wellness.
Our mission is to help people restore and enhance their personal energy through advanced rejuvenation and recovery technologies that support the body’s natural capacity for repair, regeneration, and resilience.
Whether someone comes to us seeking:
- Better recovery
- Greater vitality
- Improved sleep
- Enhanced performance
- Healthy aging
- Increased resilience
The conversation almost always comes back to the same thing:
Personal energy.
Because when personal energy improves, life improves.
A Simple Challenge
Today, ask yourself one question:
What truly gives me energy?
Not what stimulates me.
Not what distracts me.
Not what temporarily boosts me.
What genuinely restores my capacity to live, think, feel, and perform better, and enjoy my life?
Spend some time outside.
Feel the sun on your skin.
Take a walk.
Put down your phone.
Reconnect with the sources of energy that human beings have relied on for thousands of years.
And if you’d like to experience more advanced ways to support your personal energy, recovery, and vitality, we’d love to show you what’s possible.
Because after all these years, I’ve come to believe one thing is true:
Personal energy is the most valuable resource you’ll ever possess.
Protect it.
Build it.
Invest in it.
Everything else depends on it.
