What is Whole Body Photobiomodulation PBM Therapy?
PBM Therapy, previously known as Low-Level Laser Therapy, is the application of red and near infrared light to the tissue where there is degeneration or injury, to stimulate tissue regeneration, and reduce inflammation and pain. PBM Therapy appears too good to be true as it does many things, but really it does just one thing and it does it very well. It reduces oxidative stress at the cellular level. Oxidative stress is accepted as the underlying trigger for most diseases and degenerative conditions. It is also a component of the inflammatory phase of acute and chronic injuries.
In recent studies, pretreatment with photobiomodulation has also been clinically shown to increase ATP, increase blood flow, as well as improve biomarkers for injury and inflammation (including reduced lactate, creatine kinase, and C Reactive Protein) after exercise contributing to more power, less fatigue, and faster recovery.
Michael Hamblin, a Ph.D. associate professor of dermatology at Harvard Medical School and a principal investigator at Massachusetts General Hospital, states the use of PBM Therapy “can provide such benefits as the increased healing of chronic wounds, improvements in sports injuries …, pain reduction in arthritis and neuropathies….” He said in an interview that the “efficacy of such devices is now supported by at least 5000 peer-reviewed papers.” “It is not only for pain and recovery, but it has major effects helping in training,” Hamblin said. “If you use light therapy combined with a training regimen, the training is a lot more productive. You put on more muscle and can exert more work. Everything works better.”
