Whether you are looking to lose weight, stay healthy, just get your life performing better, or some other motivation; most people, experts included, will say you need to focus on these two things.

  2. Exercise
  3. Diet and Excercise

Many have started there, and many have failed. It is not uncommon for your diet and exercise plan to fail. In fact, it happens all too frequently.

The beginning of the year and so-called “beach body” season claims the most victims, let alone all throughout the year because they focus on the two most obvious aspects of your lifestyle–what you eat and your activity and don’t address the rest.

And because you’re likely eating poorly and are also inactive, you jump at it.

But if personal history has anything to say, chances are, you are going to fail, and it’s disheartening for everyone involved. It’s hard enough for the person attempting the change, but also for the practitioner or whoever suggested the regimen because neither diet nor exercise strategies alone are enough to support your change; and neither party is prepared to guide or implement a lifestyle change.

Sure, you can get rid of the bad foods, but if you are left hanging… on how to eat healthy foods in a way that you can, and enjoy, and make the other lifestyle changes that make that possible; you are left with suggestions that sound like:

…stop snacking and eat actual meals…

…stay away from processed foods…

…just say “no” to sugar…

…with challenges across the board…

These are just hollow directives, like “get more sleep,” and if you do manage to follow any or all of these tips, among many more, you might get some of the results you are looking for.

The thing is, few do, despite the testimonials that line the wallpaper of the internet from people who are inevitably doing way more than just changing their diet and exercise routine.

The reason your diet and exercise plan fails is that changes like this are not yet part and parcel of a new and improved lifestyle that you have an affinity for and are committed to. They are just suggested tactical changes to your current way of life, and it’s likely you don’t and won’t see the importance of the connected value of each of these initiatives, among many others.

It’s also because you have so little knowledge about the what and why, the how, and when, and the compelling reasons why all of this change is needed, let alone desired.

You know what you know.

Maybe you’ve acquired some insight into some dietary manipulation like changing your carbohydrate and protein ratio, or what type and when you should exercise, but you don’t yet know what you don’t know about how you are living that’s causing these problems.

And when it comes to lifestyle, even the experts fall short.

I could keep going, but there is one more reason that needs to be mentioned at this point, and it’s probably the biggest reason why you will likely not get the results that you want.

It’s a root cause that goes even deeper than what you’re eating and how you’re moving.

What is there other than diet and exercise plans?

In most programs, stress and energy are largely ignored. If you are not doing anything for either, you’re doing yourself a huge disservice.

The effects of stress on people prone to binge-eating is obvious. The answer might seem to be as simple as removing junk food from the equation, but that doesn’t work, alone for the results we really want.

There’s a chemical aspect that’s driving your cravings. It’s not only the detoxification from the foods you are eliminating, it’s cortisol. Unfortunately, both high levels of stress and sugar ratchet this hormone way up.

Cortisol is known as the stress hormone due to its role in the fight-or-flight response. It increases your blood glucose levels and improves your brain’s use of glucose. In other words, it prioritizes what you need to escape danger.

But cortisol also puts digestion and your immune system (after prolonged presence in your bloodstream) on the back burner. Not to mention, several studies have shown cortisol increases your appetite and desire for sugary foods, leading you even further down an unhealthy path.

Your fight-or-flight response doesn’t have to be ignited by a robber waving a gun around. It can be something as simple as a loud child, work that never seems to end, bad drivers, and especially in recent years the news.

However, a study indicated negative news only affects the cortisol levels of women. Unfortunately, it was found that women remembered excerpts from these articles much better than their male counterparts.

With your increased cravings for sugar and cortisol’s focus on increasing your blood glucose levels, you’re set up for disaster.

Getting enough sleep can help reduce cortisol levels. Granted, it’s not the easiest to do when you’re stressed all the time. Something like meditation or even breathing deeply (using more than just your chest) are effective ways to optimize your response to stress.

Plus, good sleep eliminates plenty of excuses:

  • “I’m too tired to go to the gym”
  • “I don’t have the energy/time to make lunch/dinner”
  • “I’ll just do it tomorrow instead”

Seven (ideally eight) to nine hours a night is the range you’re looking for. By setting a bedtime for yourself, you can experiment with how much sleep you’re getting. The actual amount of sleep is different for everyone, but your body will let you know how much you need based on your current levels of energy and the amount of stress weighing down on you. There is more to it, but for right now, just take it as a directive that’s slightly less hollow than those above.

Now, even if you manage to fix all stress issues in your life, which (and I’m not intending to sound disempowering) it’s likely you haven’t; you might still not experience the routine success you’re looking for.

Addressing the underlying cause

Great nutrition and consistent exercise are essential for a healthy body and life. Without them, you won’t be able to drop pounds, optimize your energy, health, and performance both personally and professionally.

However, even when you start getting an effective amount of sleep, you are only dealing with one element of the lifestyle equation, albeit a super important one.
First, let me address the original directives. Diet and exercise plans, assuming you have the best strategies available, are only half the story.

You can think of your body as having two halves: biochemistry and physics.

Biochemistry is basically anything you can find through a basic test. You can see elevated levels of cortisol, find out what nutrients you’re deficient in, uncover what your organs are doing, etc.

However, you may be sorely lacking when it comes to your energy that’s powering your body. Assessing and correcting your energy system it’s what bioenergetics is all about. That’s the “physics” that are not being addressed.
