Cellular Energy: The Key to Health, Higher Performance and Aging Well

By Performance Lifestyle® Coach John Allen Mollenhauer, “JAM” Founder of Regenus Center & The Charging Station NJ

I could have titled this “The Science Behind Why You Get Tired…” one of the primary questions I asked when I began developing the Performance Lifestyle®.

One of the top two identifiers of someone living a balanced and healthy “performance lifestyle” is that they regularly and systemically recharge and restore or “revitalize” their body to maintain energy balance at a minimum, meaning they are not spending more energy than they are recuperating every day.

Why? Because when your cells deplete their cellular energy, charge, or voltage, you can’t function well as a human being. Cellular energy is the key to health, higher performance, and aging well, and it’s hidden!

That is the primary reason so many of us fall short of our potential (even though we are more than capable) of following through a change, sticking to a plan, or achieving goals.

Your potential isn’t just about skill, talent, or intelligence; it starts with how much energy potential you have available to execute. Without cellular energy (cell voltage) at a high enough level, even the best intentions and strategies fall flat.

For example, if you’ve ever worn a fitness tracker like WHOOP, you already know that firsthand.

Your Readiness Score and Cellular Charge

If you track your Readiness Score, for example, in a fitness tracker like WHOOP, it is usually displayed in dark green, light green, yellow, or red.

Note: Whoop does not use the same percentages I’m using here, but the concept is the same.

🔋 Dark green (95% or greater): You feel amazing, fully charged, and ready to go.
⚡ Light green (90%) – Still solid, but a very noticeable drop in energy from dark green.
⚠️ Yellow (80% and below) – Forget it. That day is a bust. You feel off and sluggish, and pushing through feels harder.
🚨 Red (below 60%) – We don’t have to go there. You are completely drained, your body is recovering, and performance is a no-go.

Anyone who has worn a WHOOP band knows that the difference between a 95% dark green day and even a 90% light green day is a lot of energy—and a totally different life experience.

Now, think about this: What is the Readiness score measuring?

They say it’s sleep quality, but ultimately, it reflects your body’s cellular energy level, how well your cells are holding their 70mV potential, or how much they’ve discharged.

If your cells aren’t regularly restored to full charge, your readiness score drops, and your ability to perform, recover, and even think clearly plummets.

This is why you must proactively charge your body daily, like your phone or car!

Your Cells Are Batteries—Are You Charging Yours Regularly?

So that you don’t take this as some metaphorical statement you’d hear from Mom, let’s get a little scientific, so you take this as seriously as you should.

Every cell in your body is a battery. Cellular energy is stored in the EZ water around the cell, which runs primarily on cell voltage, generating an electrical charge that gives you the power to stay alive, repair tissues, think, and work!

The most common definition of “energy” is “the ability to do work,” meaning it represents the capacity to cause change or exert a force, resulting in movement or action; essentially, it’s what makes things happen.

Another definition is the strength and vitality required for sustained physical or mental activity.

But just like any battery, your cells’ voltage can lose cellular energy—and when they do, the consequences of low cell voltage are profound on your drive, motivation, and more.

A fully charged, healthy cell holds a resting membrane potential of -70 millivolts (mV) or higher, depending on the cell type. This is the optimal charge for cellular function, allowing your cells to:

✅ Efficiently create energy (ATP)
✅ Communicate properly with other cells
✅ Remove waste and toxins
✅ Repair damage and regenerate

When cell voltage begins to discharge, losing electrical potential, their ability to perform these functions declines. At -60mV or lower, the body enters a state of low performance, dysfunction, and rapid aging.

What Happens When You “Discharge” Your Cells?

Cellular discharge is a gradual voltage loss, meaning your cells aren’t holding enough electrical charge to function optimally. The graphic above says that your body’s cells have the “properties of a battery,” but that’s where the parallel stops.

Imagine a phone battery—at 100%, it runs smoothly and continues to run optimally down to just above 0% when it shuts off. In other words, the cell phone functions fully until it runs out of power.

But when it comes to your body battery, it’s different; as the charge drops, performance slows, and eventually, you are forced to sleep, rest, and recover… by the body itself because it doesn’t want to turn off! You don’t want your body to turn off, either.

When a cell’s voltage begins to discharge, the resting membrane potential (RMP) the electrical charge difference between the inside and outside of the cell—decreases. This makes the cell less functional and incapable of generating energy (ATP), communicating, repairing itself, or defending against disease.

Why Does a Cell Have Voltage in the First Place?

A healthy cell maintains an electrical charge because of the balance of ions (sodium, potassium, calcium, and chloride) inside and outside the cell. This charge is critical for energy production, communication, and proper function.

  • A high voltage (-70mV to -90mV) means the cell has enough energy to perform optimally.
  • A lower voltage (-60mV and below) means the cell struggles to maintain balance, leading to dysfunction and disease.

What Happens When a Cell’s Voltage Drops (Discharges)?

When a cell loses charge, it becomes less capable of performing its basic functions, leading to a cascade of problems:

🔻 Reduced Energy (ATP) Production:

ATP is the “chemical” currency of energy.

  • The mitochondria (your cell’s powerhouse) struggle to generate enough cellular energy ATP.
  • You feel fatigued, sluggish, and less mentally sharp.

🔻 Weaker Cell Communication:

  • Nerve signals, muscle contractions, and immune responses slow down.
  • Brain fog, poor focus, and slow reflexes increase.

🔻 Impaired Detoxification & Waste Removal:

  • Cells cannot efficiently remove toxins and metabolic waste.
  • Toxins accumulate, leading to inflammation and disease.

🔻 Slower Recovery & Repair:

  • Cells regenerate more slowly, leading to slower wound healing, muscle recovery, and aging skin.
  • Tissues break down faster than they can be rebuilt.

🔻 Increased Risk of Chronic Disease & Aging:

  • At -50mV, inflammation, and immune dysfunction accelerate.
  • At -40mV, the risk of degenerative diseases, including cancer, increases.

When your cells are discharged, your entire body begins to operate in survival mode, making it harder to function, recover, or even make healthy choices.

When too many cells in your body discharge, you experience systemic energy loss, cognitive decline, weakened immunity, and accelerated aging.

That is why people cope with stress in ways that typically result in even more biological fatigue, typically through stimulating activities—they don’t have the energy to implement solutions that require energy! Instead, they make poor lifestyle choices, which the world is all too happy to fulfill.

It’s also why people age fast, look older when they are younger, and descend into vicious cycles and downward spirals that lead to premature death.

This is exactly why you must proactively charge your body and maintain an energy-balanced lifestyle, for starters. Next, you must learn how to regenerate your life force energy for surges in power.

What Causes Cellular Discharge?

The modern lifestyle drains energy from your body. Factors that discharge your cells include:

🚨 Chronic Stress – Raises cortisol, which disrupts mitochondrial energy production.
🚨 Nutrient Deficiency – Processed foods lack essential phytochemicals, vitamins, and minerals that maintain charge.
🚨 Inflammation & Toxin Exposure – Pesticides, heavy metals, and EMFs lower voltage.
🚨 Lack of Movement & Oxygen – Sedentary lifestyles slow cellular respiration.
🚨 Dehydration & Mineral Imbalance – Cells struggle to maintain electrical potential without electrolytes.
🚨 Poor Sleep & Overwork – Recovery is when cells recharge; without it, they stay drained.

Over time, as more cells drop below -60mV, you start experiencing symptoms:

❌ Fatigue & Brain Fog – Your nervous system slows down.
❌ Slow Healing & Chronic Pain – Cells can’t repair tissue efficiently.
❌ Weakened Immunity – Your body struggles to fight infections.
❌ Accelerated Aging – DNA damage and oxidative stress increase.
❌ Cellular Mutation & Disease – Long-term energy depletion creates an environment for chronic illness.

This is where so many people get stuck in downward spirals. Without enough energy to solve problems, they default to coping strategies—stimulants, distractions, or habits that provide temporary relief but only deplete them further.

You must recharge your cells to change, improve, and optimize your human performance, well-being, or any aspect of life. And that is why you live a Performance Lifestyle!

How to Recharge Your Cellular Batteries

The good news is that your cells are rechargeable. Restoring your resting membrane potential can help you regain energy, performance, and longevity.

1️ Restore Cellular Charge with Bioenergetic Therapies

The Bottom Line: Charge Your Body, Unlock Your Potential… Your Energy Potential!

If you’re not proactively recharging your body, you are losing cell voltage, which means you’re losing performance, resilience, and longevity—long before skill, talent, or superpower even come into play.

This is why Performance Lifestyle® is built on energy balance first and why we often talk about “living in balance” with vibrant health and peace of mind.

Wonder what the second identifier is of someone living a performance lifestyle? It’s getting grounded in what they really are, and that is energy itself! Do that, and peace of mind comes with it.

Your health, performance, and longevity depend on keeping your cells charged at or above 70mV. To avoid fatigue, inflammation, and premature aging, you must take proactive steps to recharge your cellular batteries.

🔋 -70mV is YOUR NUMBER. For every single cell. For your whole body. 🔋

Make proactive recharging a part of your lifestyle, and watch how much more potential you unlock. Pretty soon, you’ll be living a performance lifestyle!
