Stress, Depletion, and the Need for Regeneration

Hans Selye—often referred to as the father of modern stress research—was the first to demonstrate how prolonged stress depletes the body. His theory, the General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS), describes the way our bodies respond to ongoing stress in three stages:

  • Alarm: The initial fight-or-flight reaction, when adrenaline and cortisol surge through the body.

  • Resistance: If stress persists, the body adapts and attempts to cope, remaining on high alert while repairing damage from the alarm stage.

  • Exhaustion: When stress becomes chronic and the body can no longer adapt, resources become depleted. This stage leads to fatigue, burnout, weakened immunity, and a greater risk of illness.

Selye’s research highlighted that chronic stress loads the body with what’s now called allostatic load—the wear and tear caused by being stuck in a state of stress. Over time, this ongoing depletion impairs systems throughout the body, setting the stage for disease. And when poor lifestyle coping habits compound it, the downward spiral accelerates—as stress is met with reactions that create even more stress and fatigue, rather than more energy and freedom.
